Middle schoolers can support nature through TLT volunteer events

The Library and DCR are teaming up and offering two volunteer opportunities for environmentally minded 6–8th graders.

The Southborough Library and Mass Dept of Conservation and Recreation are teaming up to hold more nature education programs.

Two of the upcoming workshops are special “TLT” (Teen Library Team) events that ask 6–8th graders to lend a hand in supporting the environment.

The library is touting both programs as part of their contribution to the “One Book One Borough” joint initiative in partnership with Marlborough Public Library, Northborough Free Library, and Westborough Public Library. (Scroll down for more on that.)

The special programs are presented by DCR’s Division of Water Supply Protection. Attending the meetings can count toward students’ volunteer credits.

Seed Pod Making
Thursday, March 26th, 4:30 – 5:30 PM

TLT Seed Pod making flyerThe program will help support native pollinators by helping to grow the native plants they rely on:

Get your hands dirty for a good cause. Support local biodiversity by crafting native seed pods. Mix and roll natural clay to create pods filled with pollinator friendly seeds. The clay pod will protect the seeds until it is dissolved by enough rain to help the seedling grow. Every pod you make helps the natural beauty and biodiversity of our local environment.

Teen Library Team: The Value of Trees
Tuesday, April 14th, 4:30 – 5:30 PM

TLT Value of Trees flyerThis program focuses on the health of trees:

volunteers are going to learn about local trees and their worth. Trees give us comfort and are hard-working members of our community. Check out nearby trees and learn to ID trees using bark and buds. Calculate how local trees reduce energy costs and protect water quality using real-world data tools. Check out a field kit (measuring tape, magnifying glass, field guide and journals) to adopt a local tree and track seasonal changes.

One Book One Borough

One Book One Borough promo imageThe initiative page explains that the libraries are working together to:

promote reading and community connection throughout the neighboring boroughs of Central Massachusetts.

This year we chose to read The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst and will be hosting numerous programs around the themes of neighborliness and self-exploration through new hobbies and crafts.

You may wonder what a magical fantasy book has to do with nature programs. Apparently, in the story, the main character uses spells to revive sick and dying plants.

Southborough’s contribution to the event series includes the Nature Story Time events, the Seed Exchange and an upcoming April 4th program on Sustainable Gardening.

Tapping into the more generic theme of “new hobbies”, the event list also includes the March 26th Adult Game Night.

You can check out the full list, with events in neighboring communities, here.
