“Build a Legacy Through Local Education Funds”

The Southborough Scholarship Committee is promoting the importance of supporting the Town's scholarship funds.

Last month, the Scholarship Advisory Committee announced this year’s application window for scholarships administered by the Town. Now, they are reaching out to the community to seek  donations that make the annual opportunity possible.

The committee is inviting residents to “Build a Legacy Through Local Education Funds”.

In their press release, the committee promotes the importance of supporting existing scholarships, plus the opportunity to create new scholarships in the memory of a loved one.

Below is their full announcement:

The Southborough Scholarship Committee is calling on the community to help pave the way for local students by contributing to the Town’s scholarship funds. While the Committee supports students annually, the reach of these awards is directly determined by the generosity of Southborough residents and businesses.

Support an Existing Legacy

Donors have the opportunity to contribute to several established funds, each honoring a unique spirit of service and achievement within our town. Contributions of any size are welcomed for:

  • The Town of Southborough Scholarship: Supporting residents based on community service, academics, and financial need.
  • The Carroll Harris Memorial Scholarship: Dedicated to students involved in gymnastics, recreation, or pursuing careers in education.
  • The Stefanie Ranieri Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to those who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their community and their peers.
  • The Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship: Supporting students with a proven commitment to environmental protection and volunteerism.

A Legacy in Action: Why Establish a Memorial Scholarship?

Creating a scholarship is a deeply personal way to memorialize a loved one while providing a tangible “hand up” to a Southborough student.

“Creating a scholarship is a lovely way to memorialize a loved one,” says Committee Chair Lisa Braccio. “It ensures that their values and their name continue to make a positive impact on the next generation of Southborough leaders.”

The Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship serves as a moving example of this impact. A longtime Southborough resident, Linda dedicated herself to the community through her work with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management and the Southborough Open Land Foundation (SOLF). Following her courageous battle with cancer in 2021, a scholarship was established in her memory to reflect her passion for the environment and volunteerism.

Four years later, the fund continues to flourish through community support, awarding two scholarships annually to deserving students.

“My Mom took pride in her community and loved sharing her environmental knowledge with others,” says Linda’s daughter, Tanya Curran. “We are so honored to have my Mom’s legacy continue to impact the town of Southborough in a positive way through supporting the next generation with this scholarship.”

For donating online — For readers who aren’t fans of writing checks and posting mail. . . I followed up about online donations. Recently, the Town’s portal was only listing links to support two of the four current scholarships. It turns out that was a glitch. You can now (also/again) use the Town’s payment portal to make a donation to any of the Town’s scholarships.

Click here and type Southborough in the search field to select the payment system for “Town of Southborough”.
