Obituary: William J. Smith Jr., 85

FRAMINGHAM – William J. Smith Jr., 85, of Framingham and Milford, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at the Westborough Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after a period of declining health. His wife, Doris A. (Leland) Smith, died in 1999.

Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late William and Arlene (Brown) Smith. He was employed by the Dennison Manufacturing Company for more than 50 years and was also a taxi driver for Tommy’s Taxi in Framingham. Bill served in the U.S. Navy as a proud veteran of World War II. He was on the USS Springfield. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the Boston sports teams and was a member of the Maspenock Rod and Gun Club. He was a loving father, a devoted husband and a friend to all who knew him. His memory will be forever cherished.

He is survived by his five children, William S. Smith and his wife, Carol, of Auburn, Janet Hawkins of Milford, Gary Smith and his wife, Barbara, of Franklin, Mark Smith and his wife, Haley, of Milford, and Paul Smith of Milford. He also leaves his sister, Marianna Surrette of Southborough; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Stephen Smith.

A committal of cremains with military honors will take place Thursday, March 22, at 11 a.m., in Evergreen Cemetery, Hopkinton. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Callanan Cronin Funeral Home (www.callanancronin.com), 34 Church St., Hopkinton.
