Earlier this week, I shared that Algonquin’s Wrestling team won their Sectional Championship for the second year running. At the time, I didn’t have information on when or where states would be held. The answer is their turf this weekend.

The State Championship Tournament at Algonquin tonight and tomorrow. And 9 wrestlers have qualified to compete.

I’ve also learned that three of them have each earned over 100 wins in their time at Algonquin. Not coincidentally, it is the same three who won championship titles at sectionals:

  • Drew Cozzolino 138 (4x Champ)
  • Bryce Finnegan 145 (3rd title- three straight pins including in the finals!)
  • Joe Vencile 285

If you’re looking to go cheer them on at States, here is the schedule:

  • Fri at 3:00pm – Opening Round
  • Fri at 5:30pm – Quarter Finals
  • Sat at 11:15am – Semi Final Round
  • Sat at 3:00pm – Finals

Competing are:

  • 106 Declan Belleveau
  • 113 Mark Jankovich
  • 120 Jack Golden
  • 138 Drew Cozzolino
  • 145 Bryce Finnegan
  • 152 Andrew Goddard
  • 160 Curtis Clark
  • 170 Nate Porteus
  • 285 Joe Vencile

  • 126 Wyle Ith
  • 195 Walter Haskins

Algonquin will have three wrestlers in the semi-finals!
The three captains, Drew, Bryce and Joe are looking to become Division 2 State Champs! The last State Champ was Baird Lashley in 1989 and he was in the gym on Friday cheering our guys on! Our alumni family is a terrific group of former students and parents!
These three boys have wrestled together since the Junior T-Hawks Youth team in middle school. Cannot say enough about how hard they have worked to reach their goals! Be great to fill the gym at Algonquin with T-Hawk fans!! T-hawk Nation!!
