This Saturday, May 13, Mass Audubon will lead a public bird walk through Beals Preserve. The event is sponsored by Southborough Open Land Foundation in support of the annual Bird-a-thon.

The event is free and open to the public.

What is the Bird-a-thon? Mass Audubon’s site explains:

Bird-a-thon begin in 1983 as a way to channel the excitement of a birding competition into a community building fundraiser for Mass Audubon’s wildlife sanctuaries and programs. Since its inception in 1983, thousands of team members have raised over $2 million to support Mass Audubon’s work to protect the nature of Massachusetts through conservation, education, and advocacy.

Bird-a-thon 2017 will run from 6:00 pm on May 12 through 6:00 pm on May 13.

SOLF organizers are inviting the community to join them on the 13th:

The Southborough Open Land Foundation (SOLF) will take part in Mass Audubon’s annual “Bird-a-thon” with a bird walk led by Jeff Collins, Director of Mass Audubon’s Ecological Management Department. The walk will be at Breakneck Hill Conservation Land, Breakneck Hill Road, Southborough, on Saturday May 13. Meet at 7:00 AM at the parking area. No previous bird watching experience is necessary. Bring binoculars and dress appropriately for ticks. The walk will finish at approximately 9:00 AM
