Post-season sports: Boys Basketball in Semis, Cheer at Regionals

I got a date wrong in yesterday’s sports post. Gonk Boys Basketball played in their Quarter Finals last night. (Not tonight.)

The game was a big upset. Though, T-Hawks fans definitely weren’t upset.

The Telegram writes:

The Wachusett boys swept their Mid-Wach A schedule this season, which meant the Mountaineers had beaten Algonquin twice already entering Thursday night’s Central Mass. Division 1 quarterfinal between the league rivals.

The third time was the charm, though, for the seventh-seeded Tomahawks as senior point guard Kyle Henderson scored 19 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter to book his first trip to WPI’s Harrington Auditorium, sending Algonquin past No. 2 seed Wachusett in a 71-65 thriller in Holden.

The Boys are facing St. John’s in the Semi Finals at WPI this weekend. The T-Hawks lost to the upper seed team earlier this season. But as last night’s game shows – that’s no predictor. That’s scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 pm. (Really. You can double check here!)

Speaking of Sunday. There’s one more team competing in a tournament this weekend that almost snuck past me.

Earlier this winter, Algonquin Cheerleaders rallied on the ballers at TD Garden.

This Sunday they’ll be busy cheering themselves on.

The Cheerleaders are scheduled to perform at Holyoke High School at 12:45 pm on March 4th. They are competing in the 2018 Winter Cheerleading Central & West Regional Championship.
