Scouting for Food: Flyer posting this Saturday; pickup November 10th

Above: Scouting for Food is a national Boy Scout initiative. But in Southborough, Cub Scouts and many Girl Scouts join forces with them to support the Food Pantry. (photo contributed in 2011)

Kids in town will be approaching your doors again soon. But this time they won’t be ringing doorbells or looking for candy.

It’s time for the big annual Scouting for Food drive to support the Southborough Food Pantry. That means, you’ll be seeing scouts of all types around town, putting out the flyers this Saturday.

The volunteers aren’t able to use mailboxes to promote the event any more. Instead, they’re encouraged to hang the bags with flyers attached on doorknobs. The following Saturday, November 10th, they’ll be back in your neighborhood hoping to gather a bounty for the pantry.

This year, you don’t have to be a Scout to participate in promoting and collecting for the drive. Organizers are encouraging other volunteers to pitch in. (Scroll down for those details.*)

For those of you interested in donating food/goods, here are more details:

Scouting for Food

Sample donation bag (contributed photo)Saturday, November 3rd marks the beginning of Southborough’s Annual Scouting for Food drive. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts all over town will be hanging bags on doorknobs to collect donations to benefit the Southborough Food Pantry. This is the largest food drive of the entire year for the Southborough Food Pantry and is essential for keeping the shelves stocked through the winter and beyond. Last year, Scouts collected 8,300 lbs. of donated food and pantry items!

Making a donation is simple. Just fill the bag (or more) with contributions of food, personal care, and paper products. Leave any filled bags or boxes next to your mailbox by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th, when Scouts will come and pick up your donation. Please be sure to check expiration dates on food items, as the food pantry cannot distribute expired food.

The Southborough Food Pantry and the Scouts thank you for your support!

*Volunteers and families looking to pick up bags and their routes should head to Pilgrim Church this Friday night (6:00 – 8:00 pm – not before) or Saturday morning (8:00 – 10:00 am). For additional details on that, click here for the official flyer.
