Season of Giving: Charity by schools, public safety, and community

Yesterday, I shared news of holiday festivities in Town. Today, I want to call attention to the spirit of giving community members demonstrated this month. (Click thumbnails below right to enlarge pictures.)

Southborough teachers givingTeachers supported Our Father’s Table

Southborough teachers reached out to share their efforts:

The Southborough Teachers Association assisted with the holiday celebration at Our Father’s Table in Marlborough Thursday, December 20. Eight staff members from across the district helped set up and serve the meal with others from the community. Southborough teachers helped organize bags of donated supplies for community members in needPrior to the night the Southborough Teachers donated hundreds of non perishable items; handwarmers, chapsticks, and first aid kits to go in goodie bags for those in need. On Wednesday, December 19, four teachers joined other local volunteers to put the bags together. At the dinner on Thursday the bread made by the Neary students was served with the meal and each person in attendance also took home a loaf.

Police supported Tufts Floating Hospital

The Southborough Police Department purchased and delivered presents to children in the hospital. From Facebook over a week ago:

For the second year in a row, Christmas has come early for children battling cancer at the Tufts Floating Hospital for Children in Boston. Members of the Southborough Police Department arrived at the children’s cancer center this afternoon, with over 100 toys purchased with money donated by the Southborough PD Police Union (Local 167) and the Southborough Police Association. There were approximately 37 children on the floor that the officers visited. It has been such a rewarding and heartwarming experience for all. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Firefighters (and Girl Scouts) supported Project Just Because

The Southborough Fire Department collected gifts for Project Just Because this season. Girl Scout singalong collectionSouthborough Girl Scouts helped out by encouraging toy contributions for the drive at the annual Holiday Sing-a-long. 

The Fire Department posted to Facebook last week:

To everyone near and far who donated to this years toy drive benefiting Project Just Because, Thank You! With your continued support, we collected hundreds of toys for Metrowest children in need this season.

Assabet’s Aztec Wishes

In another annual effort, Assabet students participated again in the Aztec Wishes program:

In a yearly collaborative effort to spread holiday cheer to local families in need, a Social Worker for SMOC, and Instructor’s in Assabet’s Business Technology program collect children’s wish lists. The students in the Business Technology program work with volunteers that purchase gifts on the wish lists. The Assabet students create a database and manage the entire project. The project is solely to support local families that need some extra attention during the holiday season. On Thursday, December 13th, 2018, the Business Technology students delivered the gifts to the children and families of the SMOC, Head Start Program in Marlborough.

Toys for Tots

Ted's of Fayville Toys for TotsEvery year, multiple organizations in town collect for the Worcester chapter of the Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots this campaign. This year, the charity posted thanks to Southborough business Ted’s of Fayville’s for donating a flatbet truckload of bikes for kids.
