Postseason Update: Baseball, Lacrosse and Rugby end their journeys

The past two days weren’t great ones for Algonquin varsity sports. Three more teams fell out of the postseason tournaments.

Looking back, it seems all three teams entered those games as underdogs. So the outcomes, though disappointing, weren’t surprising.

Girls Lacrosse took on upperseed Minnechaug in their district Semi-Finals on Tuesday. They had a big loss, 4-13.

Gonk Baseball went up against upperseed Shrewsbury in the district Semi-Finals yesterday afternoon. They lost 5-8. (You can read the telegram’s coverage here.)

But the most disheartening loss was Girls Rugby’s.

With no district sectionals (or even State Quarter Finals) for Girls Rugby, the T-Hawks went straight to State Semi-Finals. The team entered the tourney with a 1-4 record and was pitted against topseed Lincoln-Sudbury with its 6-1 record. Yesterday, the Girls were trounced 0-40.

That means Tennis is the only team still in it.

The State Semi-Final times have been posted for Monday. Boys Tennis will face Longmeadow at 2:00 pm on St. John’s courts. The Girls will follow at 4:00 pm, also vs. Longmeadow. If they triumph (and odds look to be in their favor) they’ll head back to St. John’s on Thursday, June 20th for the Finals.

As I previously posted, three of the Girls are also playing in the individuals tournament this weekend.

Earlier this month, I shared that the Girls Golf team came in third place at States. At the time, it wasn’t clear if much of the Westborough/Algonquin co-op team was made up of ARHS students. Especially, since all the media coverage referred to them as Westborough.

Make that all but one. . . Since then, the ARHS Harbinger interviewed the girls about their dramatic district title win. It gives the impression that most players were from Algonquin. You can read that story here
