The week in sports

Last week, two previously undefeated Titans teams lost that status.

Girls Volleyball suffered its first defeat, 3-1 to Westborough. On Friday, they scored another win, 3-2 over Acton-Boxborough. They now stand at 5-1 for this season.

Field Hockey lost its first game, 2-1 to Leominster, followed with wins over Shrewsbury (2-1) and Sutton (4-0). They now stand at 5-1-1.

Last week, MetroWest Daily News focused in on one of the Field Hockey team’s players — Lindsey Brown. According to the article, the junior was ranked a top 50 field hockey recruit for the Class of 2025 by Maxfieldhockey.com and is already committed to Northwestern, the current No. 2 team in the country.

As Algonquin’s center midfielder, the junior races the length the field hockey pitch. She stickhandles around defenders, splits defenses with passes long and short and quarterbacks the Titans penalty corner attempts.

When Brown doesn’t have the ball, she sprints to win it back or strategically steps into open space or a cleaner passing lane, drawing defenders.

“She has so much energy. She will do anything you ask, and she’ll do things that you don’t even ask her to do,” Algonquin coach Dan Welty said. “She’s a great kid, and then she’s a great teammate to everybody and leading by example. (Click here to read more.)

With a second meet behind them, Boys and Girls Cross Country teams are now the only undefeated Titans. Both teams beat Shepherd Hill at last week’s meet. The teams then traveled to the Ocean State Invitational on Saturday. The Girls finished in 2nd place as a team in one competition and the Boys 9th place in another event.

Girls Soccer tied Shrewsbury (1-1) and Sutton (0-0) with a 4-1 win over Wachusett in between. They now stand at 2-1-2.

Boys Soccer added two wins (1-0 over Shrewsbury and 5-0 over Wachusett) but also another loss (1-0 to Sutton). They now stand at 3-3-1.

Boys Golf lost to Westborough on Tuesday but beat Leominster on Thursday. They now stand at 4-3 for the season.

On Friday, Football lost its third straight game, 41-6 to Grafton.
