ARHS Post-Season Sports

Last week marked the end of the regular season for Algonquin spring varsity sports.

At this point, Titans are poised to compete in state tourneys starting this week and next, or sadly done with their journeys this year.

On Wednesday, Outdoor Track competed in the “Annual Battle of the Boroughs” against Westborough. The Titans Girls team’s Rebecca Palmer and Niamh O’Sullivan scored 1st & 2nd Place in the Pentathlon. For the Boys, Victor Norman scored 2nd place. You can view the full results here.

They returned to Westborough on Saturday for the Division A MidWach League Championships. The Girls team came in 3rd place and the Boys 4th place. You can view the individual results here.

This week, both teams will send several athletes to Merrimack College to compete in the D2 State Championships for Track and Field Thursday through Saturday. Four members of the Boys team and one of the Girls will also compete in Thursday’s D2 Pentathlons. (For more details, click here.)

As for the MIAA post season playoffs, the first brackets dropped this morning for Rugby and Boys Volleyball.

Both sports tourneys are scheduled to kickoff this Thursday, but the individual game schedules are still mostly TBA. So, stay tuned for an update later this week.

Algonquin Boys Volleyball made the cut for their Division 1 playoffs. Although they lost 2-3 to Bay Path last week, they followed with a 3-1 win at home over Hopkinton. (Check out Jeff Slovin’s highlight pics from Instagram below.)

They ended the regular season with a 9-9 record, the .50 they needed to qualify for the brackets. But, they’ll have to enter at the Preliminary Round as the 38th seed team. They’ll travel to play 27th seed Taunton. (As of mid-afternoon, the schedule wasn’t posted, but you can look for that to be updated here.)

In Rugby, the ARHS Boys are 5th seed for Division 2. They’ll travel to play #4 Catholic Memorial in the Round of 8. (You can look for that schedule to be posted here.) The Titans won 29-26 the last time the two teams faced off in April, on the private school’s turf. If they win, they’ll challenge top seed Hanover for the semifinals. The 5th seed Girls didn’t qualify for their D1 tourney.

Gonk Softball also failed to qualify for their D1 tourney. They would have needed to win all four of their games last week. They beat North Middlesex 10-1 and Quabbin 7-5, but followed with losses to Fitchburg 11-2 and Westborough 6-3. They closed out their season with a 7-11 record.

Brackets for Baseball and Lacrosse are due out tomorrow, and Tennis on Friday.

Baseball finished up its regular season with three more wins, improving their record to 15-5. As of Friday morning, they were ranked #9 for Division 2.

In Lacrosse, the Titans Girls were ranked only #22 as of Friday, but assured a spot in the playoffs. (Last year, their team didn’t qualify.) The Boys added two more wins last week, bringing them to 15-3. As of Friday, they were #11 for D2.

Last week, the co-op Girls Golf team out of Westborough lost at the MidWach League Championships. (Wachusett came in 1st place. Westborough was listed as also losing to Quabbin. The results weren’t listed for how it fared against other schools in the tournament.)

Again, I plan to post an update later this week after more competition schedules are posted.
