At last night’s Select Board meeting, the board helped the Scholarship Advisory Committee honor five recipients of four scholarships, including a new one created this spring in honor of late resident Stefanie Ranieri.
The Scholarship Advisory Committee reviewed applications by residents who currently enrolled in a “post-secondary undergraduate program” or high school seniors planning to attend one next year.
The Southborough Town Scholarship, established in 1987, takes into consideration volunteer and work experiences that benefit the Southborough Community, academics, financial need, extracurricular activities, as well as written expression. This year, a $1,000 award was given to Alexis Ellis.
The other scholarships use the same general criteria as the Town scholarship, but add additional requirements/focus.
The Carroll Harris Memorial Scholarship, established in 1999 – the applicant must also have participated in gymnastics, plan to major in physical education, education or recreation, or have demonstrated active participation in a town recreation program. This year, a $1,000 award was given to Maya Regan.
The Linda Hubley Memorial Scholarship, established in 2022 – the applicant must also demonstrate a commitment to their community through volunteerism, environmental protection and/or ongoing education in these areas. This year, a $1,000 award was given to Joseph Truman.
The Stefanie Ranieri Scholarship, established in 2025 – According to SAC member Lisa Braccio, the committee worked with Cecelia and Chuckie Capello to launch this scholarship in honor of their mother who died tragically this winter at the age of 53. Funds were raised starting in April. The timing meant it was too late to include the information on the original scholarships application form. But, they developed criteria to use for selecting recipients from the pool of applicants. In addition to the general criteria applicants had to demonstrate “commitment to their community and their peers.”
Two $1,500 awards were made to Margaret Fitzgerald and Gabriella Lomuto.
The SAC shared pictures below of four of the recipients, along with their members and State Representative Kate Donaghue, plus Ranieri’s family (for identifying details, see photo captions):
