The week in sports

Three Titans teams are still undefeated this winter. This Saturday is Boys Hockey's annual "Arsenault Night".

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week. This week that includes a special annual night honoring an ARHS alum who was Killed in Action.

Algonquin Boys and Girls Swim teams are still undefeated seven meets into the season. Four of the wins were in meets last week. The Titans beat Bromfield (Boys 116-53 & Girls 96-78), Grafton/Northbridge (Boys 88-82 & Girls 111-68), Gardner (Boys 72-52 & Girls 84-77), and Westborough (Boys 85-65 & Girls 95-72).

Photographer Jeff Slovin posted highlights from the meet with Gardner:

ARHS Girls Hockey continues to dominate with a 10-0 record. Their most recent wins were over Pope Francis Prep (3-1) on Monday and Leominster (5-0) on Saturday.

Slovin posted highlights from the Leominster game:

Boys Hockey is now 4–4 after beating Grafton 7-2 on Wednesday, but losing to Gloucester 3-1 on Saturday. Slovin posted highlights from the win:

This Saturday, the Boys are putting on their annual “Arsenault Night” to honor former ARHS Boys Hockey player Brian Arsenault (Class of ’04) who was killed while serving in Afghanistan in 2014. On instagram, ARHS Athletic announced:

On Saturday, January 17 the boys hockey team will take on Hopkinton at Northstar for Arsenault Night. The team will wear their camouflage uniforms for the first time this season in his honor. In addition, we ask if you are able to bring an item to donate to our local food pantry. During the game there will also be a 50/50 and gift raffle with proceeds going to the Brian K. Arsenault Foundation scholarship. Please come out and support the team on this special night and give a little for someone who gave everything.

Donations can also be made here through Venmo.

Boys Basketball beat Leominster 55-53 last Tuesday before losing to Fitchburg 54-42 on Friday. That updates their record to 5–3.

Girls Basketball improved their record to match that by winning both of their games last week — 53-48 over Leominster and 41-34 over Nashoba.

The Indoor Track teams’ schedule meet at Fitchburg last Wednesday was cancelled. But the Boys & Girls teams did compete at the Northeast Invitational hosted by MSTCA Friday through Sunday. Gonk’s best result was finishing 4th place in the Girls 1600m Sprint Medley Relay. For the Boys, that was also their best event, with a 7th place finish.

Boys Wrestling hosted a meet with Shepherd Hill last Wednesday. Only five out of 13 of the competing Titans won their duals. (On Saturday, they travelled to a multi-school meet at Brooks School, but I couldn’t find any posted results from that event.)

Girls Gymnastics scored last place in the meet it hosted last Wednesday against Marlborough, Shrewsbury, and Westborough.

The ARHS Ski team competed in its first race last week. I couldn’t find any posted schedules or results for the team. But Slovin captured highlights in two posts:
