Snow impact updates

Neary Principal Finalist visit moved to Thursday, Southborough Library closed today, safety reminders, and more

I’m updating on the storm impacts in Southborough including closures and schedule changes.

When I wrote last night about NSBORO Schools being cancelled for today, I was unaware that Governor Healey had announced she was keeping in place a State of Emergency for most of the state, including Worcester County.

A press release from yesterday afternoon included:

Governor Healey has also directed that non-emergency Executive Department state employees should not report to their workplaces on Tuesday, February 24, and is urging employers to consider having employees work remotely to the extent possible, especially those subject to the travel ban.

Given that, it’s not a surprise that Assabet Valley Regional Tech High School and the Southborough Library are also closed today.

What is more surprising is that the Southborough Town House is scheduled to open at noon. (But I recommend checking in advance with a department you plan to visit before showing up. Some workers may be remote or out today if they commute from an area that was hit harder by the storm.)

That means that tonight’s Select Board Meeting can take place in-person as originally scheduled. (Although, as all of their regular meetings are, it is a hybrid one that allows remote participation.)

There were power outages in areas of town yesterday, but they were minor compared to hard hit areas of the state. And as of this morning, National Grid is showing that no Southborough customers are without power. (So, if you have a power outage at your home or business, you need to report it, because they aren’t aware!)

NSBORO Schools had two events planned for today that they have rescheduled:

  • The one of interest to more readers is the the Neary Principal Finalist visit. Tom Millett’s Open House will be held at Neary this Thursday, February 26th from 6:15 – 7:15 pm.  (Don’t worry, it won’t overlap with the Finn Principal Finalist’s visit, which is from 5:00 – 6:00 pm.) Read more about the finalists and visits here.
  • For parents of 7th graders, the Trottier DC Parent Orientation night is moved to next Tuesday, March 3rd.

While I’m updating on the storm impacts, I’ll share a safety reminder to make sure your house vents are cleared. I found an image (below) posted by the Northborough Fire Dept that provides a visual example of vents your house may have. (Most of those don’t apply if you have a home with electric heat. But one that would still apply is the dryer vent.) And, I’m reminding of the Southborough Fire Department’s request that the public help keep their neighborhood fire hydrants clear.  Those should be dug out by 3 feet in every direction.

This winter has sometimes felt like we’re in a snow globe that someone keeps shaking, and the forecast for the remainder of this week doesn’t help! (Though none of the upcoming snow forecasts are big ones.)

Feb 2015 photo by Beth MeloStill, it’s good to remember that (so far) we’re in much better shape than we were in the winter of 2015, when area roofs were burdened with about 50″ of snow and the Town had only one sidewalk plow, which was out of commission!
