The Algonquin production of Waiting for Lefty opened at the school last night. Performances continue through Saturday in Algonquin’s Small Performance Theater. Here’s a description of the play:
One of the most celebrated and significant plays of the modern American theatre. Set in the Depression era, and dealing with the cynical exploitation of the working class, “Waiting for Lefty” presents a series of powerful and moving episodes about discouraged and disgruntled workers who overcome fear and corruption to fight for a better life. The play, inspired by the 1934 Taxi Strike, was first presented by the famous Group Theatre in New York City, and became both a symbol of its times and a beacon for many famous playwrights and actors who came under its influence. A play known as “the birth cry of the thirties” and a play not to be missed!
Performances are tonight at 8:00 pm, Friday at 7:00 pm, and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00 pm. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. You can purchase tickets at the door or reserve in advance by emailing arhslefty@hotmail.com. Seating is limited.
