SPD investigating “Not Credible” threat against Trottier

This morning, Trottier students will see an increased police presence at their school. But the Southborough Police Chief is seeking to assure the community, “there is no credible threat” or “safety risk.

The announcement through a press release explains that the SPD has been investigating an alleged threat of violence against the middle school by a student.

The press release posted to Facebook states:

Southborough Police Investigating Threat, Determine it to be Not Credible

SOUTHBOROUGH – Chief Ryan Newell reports that the Southborough Police Department is investigating a threatening statement made by a student at the P. Brent Trottier Middle School, after the student threatened an act of violence against the school to another student.

On Monday afternoon, the Southborough Police Department was notified by the P. Brent Trottier Middle School that a student had made a threatening statement and Southborough Police immediately launched an investigation in coordination with the Public Schools of Northborough and Southborough.

Following a thorough review, investigators determined that there is no credible threat to the school community and no immediate safety risks.

Out of an abundance of caution, Southborough Police will increase its presence at the Trottier Middle School on Wednesday.

“Our investigation has determined that there is no credible threat to the school community,” said Chief Newell. “We take any report of this nature very seriously, and our officers, detectives, and department clinician worked closely with school officials to ensure the safety of students and staff. This remains an open investigation, and charges connected to the statement made to another student may be filed at a later date. The safety of our community will always remain our top priority.”

Chief Newell followed up this morning to make sure I saw the press release. Unsurprisingly, given that any students involved would be minors, his email noted “There will not be any further information at this time”.
