Fire Dept Open House at Heritage Day

Interactive Demos, Tours, and more

When my kids were little, fun at the Fire Station was one of their favorite Heritage Day highlights. So, I’m excited to share that for the second year running, Southborough Fire Department is bringing back the fun!

The SFD is holding an open house from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm on Heritage Day, October 13th. Lt Zachary Clements filled me on on what they have in store for the public this year.

Personnel will be giving tours of the fire station section of the Public Safety Building and offering “live demos”.

The demo that’s the biggest hit with kids is the chance (with help) to use a fire hose to put out a house fire. (Don’t worry, they’re not really setting houses ablaze. They’ll use the SFD’s prop house with “flames” to knock down in the windows. See pics below they posted to Facebook last year.)

Older participants may want to check out the demo for properly putting out grease fires.

From 12:00 – 12:30 pm, the crew will use the Training Tower for a Fire Safety Demo. (They’ll use “theatrical smoke” to demonstrate conditions you would find early in the stages of fire development and discuss families making plans for safe evacuations.)

But the biggest draw for many young kids is the classic — all of the big fire trucks, ambulances, and rescue vehicles. (I forgot to ask if they’ll have the antique vehicles for display this year. You can see more about those, including photos in last year’s post.)

The station is located at 32 Cordaville Road. The fire station’s parking lot is likely to fill up, but you can use the parking lot at Woodward School next door and walk over.
