The week in sports

ARHS Field Hockey and Soccer playing in MIAA D1 playoffs today.

Three Algonquin varsity teams are in MIAA playoffs this week. Two teams failed to make their brackets. Here’s the latest in ARHS sports.

Both Soccer teams will have to win a preliminary round today (Monday, November 3rd) to earn the right to face to play in the round of 32 against much tougher competition.

Boys Soccer is ranked #33 in their D1 tourney. This afternoon, they traveled to play #32 Lincoln-Sudbury at 2:30 pm. If they win, they’ll have to take on top seed St. John’s Wellesley in the Round of 32 on Wednesday.

Girls Soccer lost last week’s season game, updating their record to 2-10-6. Their ranked #30 in their D1 tourney. This afternoon at 6:00 pm, they’ll host a preliminary round game against #35 Haverhill. If they win, they’ll have to face #3 Wellesley for the Round of 32 on Wednesday.

ARHS Field Hockey is 17th seed for the Division 1 tournament. It’s a far cry from their #3 status last fall, but they still earned a Bye on this fall’s prelim round.

Today, they’ll travel to play #16 Malden Catholic in the Round of 32 at 4:30 pm.

The two teams that failed to make post-season tourneys fell short by just one rank in their divisions’ Power Rankings.

Gonk Football‘s failure to qualify wasn’t a surprise. The Titans had been a long shot after big losses for most of its season.

The team finally managed to win two straight games in mid October. But they followed with another shut out on Halloween night. ARHS lost 41-0 to Wachusett. That updated their record to 2-6. Their final ranking was #17 in a sport where playoffs are capped at 16 teams.

That doesn’t mean they’re done for the season. The Titans will travel to play Groton-Dunstable in Central Mass’ non-playoff bracket this Friday night at 7:00 pm.

Girls Volleyball‘s status was more surprising. Last week, I wrote that the team may have made their playoffs by the skin of their teeth. The Titans had been ranked #32 after their final season game. Unfortunately, that changed once all teams’ scores were finalized.

Titans Volleyball dropped one slot in final D1 Power Rankings. That put them in a category that requires a 0.500 record to qualify. Given their 0.278 record (based on 5 wins out of 18 games), the team’s October 21st game turned out to be their last. (At least they ended with a win.)
