The threat of an April snowstorm did not dampen any spirits at the Fourth Annual Town Spelling Bee and Raffle held earlier this month at Trottier. A record 22 teams competed to determine to take home the spelling champion title.

Before a capacity crowd, The Spellchekers — Meaghan Leone, Danielle Horton and SueEllen Renfrew — took home top honors in this year’s bee. The team correctly spelled ‘punctilious’ to narrowly defeat the Well-Read Sox (Jan Herzog, Jen Strong and Lori Winer) in the final round. The Spellunkers, with spellers Michelle Brownlee, Kim Pepper and Danielle Barney, also turned in a strong performance spelling their way to third place.
In addition to some outstanding spelling, the crowd was also treated to some of the most creative costumes in town spelling bee history. The panel of judges, consisting of Neary Principal Linda Murdock, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Gobron and Northborough-Southborough Villager contributor Donna McDaniel, had the difficult task of selecting the best costume of the evening.
Ultimately, the SPELLVIS trio of Kim Bianchi, Gwen Robison and Dan Shine, rock n’ rolled their way to the top of the charts. Additional costume nods went to Darlene Scorzelli, Nancy Boynton and Keith Lavoie of The Letterheadz, and to Rene Moulton, Brittany Burns and Emily Philbin of Wordstock.
The Spelling Bee was a huge success for the Southborough Education Foundation (SEF) who raised almost $14,000 to be used to fund creative programs in the Southborough public schools. For information about SEF and to see a slideshow from this year’s event, please visit www.southboroughed.org.
