APTO “dangerously below budget” for safe prom night

For more than twenty years, parents of Algonquin students have sought to keep kids safe after prom. The APTO is asking for help managing it again this year. They are hoping the community and businesses answer the call.

The APTO’s goal is to avoid a substance-abuse tragedy on a night that is known to be one of the most dangerous nights for teenagers.

So, how do you entice juniors not to go wild after the biggest social event of their teenage lives? Apparently by organizing a “free”, safe after-party so amazing, they can’t resist. (That’s not cheap to pull off.)

The school’s Post Prom Party costs $14,500 to entertain more than 350 teens. The Algonquin Parent Teacher Organization informs me that they are still well below what they need.

Here’s the APTO’s request they asked me to share from their April newsletter:

For years, high school teens have looked forward to attending their prom and celebrating afterward with their classmates. Think back to the night of your prom… Did you make good decisions? Was it organized? Was it safe? Was it fun?

We (APTO; Algonquin Parent Teacher Organization) want to see that this special event will be memorable and safe.

This entire event is organized and funded by parents and the communities of Northborough/Southborough. An event of this size, 350+ teens, is an expensive undertaking and we are dangerously below budget at this time but we are confident with this reminder, businesses and families will rally to make the Junior Post Prom another great memory for our children.

In the past, dozens of dedicated people have volunteered their time and talents to make the Junior Post Prom an event to remember. We rely on the businesses in our towns and parents to donate to this ‘free’ event for our teens.

It really does take a village to raise a child and we hope that you will donate to assist us in reaching our goal and providing a safe, fun after prom celebration.

We wish to offer a most sincere thank you to the families and local businesses who have already donated.

If you are interested in donating please send checks made payable to APTO Junior Post Prom and mail to ARHS 79 Bartlett Street, Northboro, MA 01532.

I’m told they will continue to accept donations after this weekend. So don’t worry about whether or not the check will make it in time.

You can also follow up to donate or volunteer by contacting the committee chair, Sue Distler (774-249-0182 or sue.distler@gmail.com.)

Donors will be listed and thanked in APTO’s June newsletter.

Thank you for a great write up Beth!

This is Algonquin’s ONLY prom and many of us try to make it as special as possible! We know parents (and their kids) have already spent a lot of money to make this night memorable but we are trying to keep them SAFE too. My kids had a blast at the Post Prom Party…there is so much for them to do….ice skate, mechanical bull riding, obstacle course and the hypnotist is always hysterical! Prolong the party in the right environment! We hope more members of the community consider donating!
