Town Election: Shea and Stivers for selectman; smaller races for School Committee and Library Trustees

The deadline for filing papers in the Town election was last night. While two potential candidates dropped out without filing, we still have three races and no empty seats.*

Advisory Committee member Sam Stivers filed to run for the Board of Selectmen against incumbent Brian Shea. Stivers ran in the last two Town elections for the same board last year. While he lost out, both races were more crowded. This will be his first time running against Shea.

Shea took office in 2015, after beating former selectman Bill Boland. He capture 43% of the vote in that three way race. In Stivers’ most recent attempt this fall he came in 2nd, capturing 36% of votes in the four way special election.

A week ago, there weren’t enough candidates to fill seats on the School Committee and Library’s Board of Trustees. By the weekend each board had a race. Those races have narrowed a bit since my last post. It now looks like each board will have three candidates vying for two seats on the May ballot.*

Here is the updated list of candidates:

School Committeevote for two – 3 year term
Jessica A. Devine, 1 Pinecone Lane
John W. Gobron, Jr., 9 Latisquama Road
Jennifer M. Primack, 3 A Powder Mill Lane

Board of Trustees Southborough Libraryvote for two – 3 year term

The Library plans to host its annual Candidates Night on Wednesday, May 2nd. Stay tuned for details on that. And be sure to mark the election day on your calendar – Tuesday, May 8th.

Updated (4/12/18 9:07 am): The Candidate’s Night forum was moved. (It was originally posted for the following night.)

*That can change if anyone pulls out before 5:00 pm on April 5th.
