Open discussion thread (Ask questions, share opinions) and a Call for photos

Above:  A beautiful autumn reservoir view from Allan Bezanson in 2016.

It’s time for another open thread. What’s on your mind this week, Southborough?

I’ll tell you what’s on mine. I love it when readers share beautiful photos (like the one above) or fun ones – like snapshots of trick or treaters. So, if you’ve got any great fall pics – or see something worth taking a moment to pull out your phone for – send them in. The invitation covers nature shots, community/school events, sports, etc.

Don’t just post them to instagram. Email your favorite pics to mysouthborough@gmail.com.

Now, back to the standard open thread explanation. . .

For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
  • Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
  • Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
  • Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
  • Point out interesting or helpful resources

You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

Just watched the ZBA meeting tonight 10-17-18. There is more concern for the ugly turkeys (fowl) and deer, than a man who comes before the board wanting to build an additional garage, and is denied such, because an abutter needs a clear view to watch turkeys, and questions the validity of a person owning 5 cars. Can you imagine the nerve. The other abutter who was assured many years ago, that the lot next to him would remain one lot, and not divided. It’s divided now.. The board closed all public comments, but decided to reopen it so the first abutter could dig a bigger hole for the applicant. Very nice. Here’s the real deal. THERE IS NO ZONING REQUIREMENT, IN SOUTHBOROUGH, THAT STATES YOUR GARAGE MUST HOUSE A CERTAIN NUMBER OF VEHICLES, BASED ON YOUR LOT SIZE. OF COURSE WE COULD SAY THAT THE APPLICANT SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED ONE ACRE FOR EVERY ONE OF HIS VEHICLES, AND THEN THE ABUTTERS WOULDN’T HAVE TO LOOK AT THE CARS, BECAUSE OF THE LAND MASS. This isn’t Kansas anymore, and Toto is dead. The ZBA denial was a poor decision. Just one of many. The perception of Southborough being a sleepy little town, with bucolic settings, where we borrow sugar from our neighbors, the women folk gather by candlelight to crochet, and the men belly up to the bar at the local saloon. Homes and buildings are encroaching on every available lot. You better get used to it.
