Here are highlights of what’s happening around town this week. It’s a busy one with new programs launching for Southborough Seniors.

Monday, March 11, 2019

  • No School – Professional Development Day: K-12 students in Southborough and Northborough public schools have no school while teachers are in Professional Development sessions.
  • Scam Presentation (11:30 am – 12:30 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Please sign up and join Southborough’s Police Officer Aaron Richardson and Kevin Landry in a presentation on current and past scams that have been happening to our seniors. They will inform us on what to look for and what to be aware of in our daily lives. These scams are coming by way of phone and also right to your door. For details, see dedicated post.

  • Senior Songsters from from Senior Center newsletterSenior Songsters (11:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: All seniors are welcome to join the group to its firsts gathering of the season – join in with the singing and laughter with Jim at the keyboard.   • Crossfit program through Senior Center flyerPennant Crossfit class for Seniors (1:15 – 2:00 pm) @ Pennant CrossFit , 12 Southville Rd: First session twice weekly Fitness Starter Class (through the Southborough Senior Center) funded through a grant provided by Mass. Elder Affairs. Suggested donation to the Friends of the COA of $3 per class. Plan on attending most sessions of the progressive 16 week program. For details, click on flyer right.
  • 6th-8th Grade Book Group (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: The monthly book discussion group is run by Young Adult Librarian Aileen Sanchez. If you are interested in joining the group, contact Aileen at 508-485-5031 or asanchez@cwmars.org
  • Poetry Workshop (6:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Main Level: At the semi-monthly sessions, Everyone is asked to bring in five copies of their original poetry for supportive feedback. If you don’t have a poem, come and share your insights. The group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month.

  • Senior Center’s St. Patrick’s Day Party (12:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Enjoy an Irish Meal and music by “Jug O’ Punch” band. Pre-registration required. Suggested Donation of $6 per member of Friends of Council on Aging. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Basic Rights in Special Education (6:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Melican Middle School, 145 Lincoln Street, Northborough: NSPAC (Northborough Southborough Special Education Parent Advisory Council) will host a free workshop by Jessica Sales Cohen from the Federation for Children with Special Needs on IDEA and Mass Laws, Evaluations & Referrals, The Team Meeting, IEP and 504 Plans, Effective Progress, Transition, Review of Important Timelines, and Strategies for Success.   • Southboro Wellness: Anxiety & Depression (6:30 – 6:30 pm) @ Southborough Wellness, 205 Turnpike Rd: Workshop on Anxiety & Depression. Part of the store’s free monthly series. Registration is not required.
  • Restorative Sleep Workshop (7:00 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: Jill Vroman of Fitness and Wellness will teach about when sleep is most productive and restorative. Find tools to change your thought patterns on sleep to pull your bodies parasympathetic nervous system into play. Registration is not required. For details, see Facebook event.

  • Bay Circuit Trail hike or snowshoe (1:00 – 2:30 pm) @ meet at the Southborough Senior Center for carpool: A free program of the Trailblazers for active seniors. Please register for the event by calling 508-229-4453. Carl Guyer will lead the about 2 mile hike. For details, see Trailblazers flyer. (For snowshoe details, see dedicated post on past events.)
  • Cookbook Club (6:30 – 8:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Join the Library for its monthly cookbook group. This month’s selection is The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life by Ellie Krieger. Participants will each cook a different dish from the selected cook book of the month and bring in the food to share. To avoid overlap, email Marianna (at msorensen@southboroughma.com) with your selection.
  • Best Buddies Inclusion Coffeehouse (7:00 – 9:00 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School Auditorium: ARHS Best Buddies invites the community to their second annual evening of music and dance, along with friendship and fun to celebrate and showcase the abilities of members of our community.   • St. Patrick’s Day Party (for young ones) (10:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ Southborough Recreation Center, 21 Highland Street: Southborough Kindergroup and Southborough Recreation invite members of the community to a St. Patrick’s Day Party for toddlers and preschoolers. There will be a half hour of Irish music with Dave Garden at 11am. Similarly to last year’s party, there will be crafts and light refreshments. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Puzzle Club (10:30 am – 12:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: Join other patrons in piecing together an image, or tackle a puzzle by yourself. Come to the Library for a relaxing, yet stimulating time and good conversation over finely crafted puzzles. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Ukelele from from Senior Center newsletterUkalele Lessons (1:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: First of 8 classes for seniors. Suggested Donation $50 – Must sign up for the full 8 weeks. For details, click on description right from Senior Center newsletter.
  • SEF’s Family Feud (Doors open at 5:30 pm, show starts at 6:30 pm) @ Trottier Middle School auditorium: Cheer on the staff of Finn & Woodward as they team up and compete against each other for a night of friendly competition, laughs, and fun! Come early for pizza, snacks, raffle, and silent auction. Fundraiser to support Southborough Education Foundation’s Innovative Grants program for our schools. For details, see dedicated post.
