Events this week: “Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness”, Meditation, Adult Reading Circle, Art installations and more (Updated)

For the first week in what seems like forever, a couple of events are actually in person. Meanwhile, a new virtual offering has been added for adults.

Here are highlights of what’s happening this week for Southborough.

Tuesday, June 2, 2020

  • Life on the Farm Video Series (10:00 – 10:15 am) @ Facebook or Instagram: Chestnut Hill Farm’s farmers and staff will give you a live peek into always-busy farm life, including farm chores, what’s growing in the greenhouse and outside, farm wildlife, baby animals and their mamas, and more. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Library’s Virtual Story Time (10:00 am) @ Facebook: Children’s Librarian “Miss Kim” will hold a story time on Facebook live, which will also be viewable after. (Note: you don’t have to have a Facebook account to watch the Library’s videos.) These will take place every Tuesday and Friday through August.
  • Meditation (5:30 – 6:15 pm) @ zoom: The free weekly meditation sessions are conducted by senior instructors with the Art of Living Foundation. In these sessions you will learn how just a few minutes of simple breathing and meditation can help maintain mind-body wellness and great energy levels!   • Yoga at Home (5:15 – 6:15 pm) @ zoom: Southborough Recreation is offering the free virtual classes. Stretch, de-stress and invite deep peace. This class, open to all levels of experience and ability, includes breath work, posture sequences to build strength and cultivate balance and concentration. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness ( 6:30 pm) @ zoom: Southborough’s Conservation Commission is holding a Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program listening session This will go over the work done by consultants for Southborough to become a certified MVP community while simultaneously updating the local Hazard Mitigation Plan. This work done under a state grant is an effort for the Town to become more resilient to climate change. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Strategies for Parenting the Anxious or Depressed Child (7:00 – 8:00 pm) @ zoom: Pre-register ASAP for Southborough Youth & Family Services’ virtual workshop series. Learn some interventions frequently used by clinical and behavioral specialists to diffuse crises and reduce conflict while still setting limits and boundaries. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Virtual Reading Circle (8:00 – 9:00 pm) @ zoom: Virtual Reading Circle – for adults Do you wish you could talk about books with a fellow bibliophile? Are you dying to share the latest book you read? The Southborough Library is hosting a Virtual Reading Circle starting in June on Thursdays evenings for adults. Pre-registration is required.   • Art on the Trails Installation Weekend (10:00 am – 5:00 pm) @ Beals Preserve: The public is invited to visit Beals Preserve and watch the artists install their work for the annual outdoor art exhibit along the Southborough Open Land Foundation’s trails. (Visitors must practice social distancing.) The event will also be live streamed on the website. For details and trail map, see dedicated post.

  • ARHS Graduation/Diploma Ceremony – Class of 2020 (8:00 am – 6:30 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School parking lot: Algonquin’s Class of 2020 diploma ceremony. Graduates signed up for specific time slots for them to pickup their diplomas and cross the stage with their dedicated 2-car audience. (The school is also planning for an outdoor Graduation this summer where graduates can celebrate together, if guidance from the Department of Public Health allows.) Updated (6/2/20 2:54 pm): Initially, I wrote that the virtual story times had dropped off. The ones that Kindergroup was running weekly are done for now. (Though, they note that some surprise ones may pop up for rainy days. You can follow the Facebook group for that.) The Library’s had been scheduled to run only through May. But after I posted this morning, the Library updated Facebook to indicate they would continue running twice weekly through August.
