Do you want to help shape the future of the Southborough Library?

If so, now’s your chance. There is a new vacancy on the library’s Board of Trustees and they’re looking for someone to fill it. Here’s a description of the position:

The Library Trustees are ultimately responsible for the direction and mission of the public library and the board works with the Library Director and staff to ensure the smooth operation of the library — whether it is considering new services, facilities issues or long-range planning.

A potential Library Trustee would be a person who cares about the Library and advocates for improved funding and support for our public library.

Trustees are appointed jointly by the Board of Trustees and the Board of Selectmen for a three-year term.

If you’re interested, submit your resume and a letter of interest to the Selectmen’s office by early September. If you’d like more information, stop by the library and chat with Director Jane Cain (she’s out until August 17) or anyone at the front desk.

And if the library’s not your thing, there are plenty of other committee vacancies up for grabs – Youth Commission, Recycling Committee, Historical Commission, and more … including something called a Fence Viewer. I have no idea what that is, but it sounds like something I’d be good at.

Just a note…the process described above to become a trustee applies only when there’s a vacancy because of a resignation. Otherwise, trustees are elected for three–year terms and whomever is chosen to fill the vacancy for whatever number of years are remaining in the term will have to be on the ballot for that seat in the May 2010 election. That would not apply if the term of the person resigning would have ended in May 2010.

It is a great library with people who’ve been very dedicated, many for many years. Surely there should be a few candidates who would be happy to join them!

Also FYI, last I heard the Fence Viewer is a position that’s been with us from the earliest days when they had to walk to the borders of the town once a year to make certain there were no encroachments. It may be that the Fence Viewers still do walk the bounds–on New Year’s Day or thereabouts! So….if you want a good walk to start the new year, there’s a job for you!
