Public safety officials in Southborough have been working with their counterparts in Ashland and Hopkinton to look at regionalizing police and fire dispatch services. The Metrowest Daily News reports the towns just landed a $50K grant to help them with their research.

Fire Chief John Mauro Jr. told Selectmen last February that centralizing services with Ashland and Hopkinton — towns we already have a mutual aid agreement with — would not be trivial, but it was “worth looking into.” Selectmen agreed and authorized an initial $5K toward the project.

The goal of sharing dispatch services would be to cut costs. A report is expected sometime within the next year.
