The week in sports: Students to vote on new ARHS Mascot this Friday

Above: The old Tomahawks logo still on many uniforms, and the “A” for Algonquin currently used by ARHS Athletics on twitter, will eventually be replaced by a new mascot. Students will rank their favorites of the five options this week.

The biggest news I have to share on Algonquin Athletics isn’t about an individual team or athlete. It’s the announcement that this is the week students will vote to choose their new mascot. At the most recent Regional School Committee meeting, the administration explained that students will use ranked choice voting to decide.

On Friday, Principal Sean Bevan wrote:

  • On Wednesday (2/2), period 6 teachers will show a ~15 minute screencast about the mascot renaming process, along with overviews of each of the five mascot options, created by our Sports and Entertainment Marketing students. Additionally, that day, students in our Social Media Marketing class will launch an information campaign on the ARHS Instagram account. The goal of both efforts is to inform students about the mascot renaming process and the five choices.

  • On Friday (2/4), during period 3, students will cast their votes for the next mascot. The students’ choice will be revealed in a live-streamed event soon after. I will keep you posted!

The narrowed down list of five options students will choose from are the Eagles, Falcons, Thunder, Titans and Nor’ Easters.

Speaking of Nor’ Easters. . . It was no surprise that Saturday’s storm prevented Algonquin Boys and Girls Basketball from playing at TD Garden. They’ll head to the parquet floor this Saturday.

That delay wasn’t the only disappointment for the ballers’ last week. The Boys lost to Shrewsbury (37-45) and St. John’s (45-79), while the Girls lost to Shrewsbury (44-39). But it wasn’t all bad. The Girls did score another win, beating St. Bernard’s (64-32).

Gonk Ski teams have continued to score well in their competitions. At last Monday’s league races, ARHS Girls came in 1st out of 9 teams and the Boys 3rd out of 10 teams.

Wednesday was a pretty good day for Gonk Athletics. Wrestling Beat Quabbin 42-54, Boys Hockey beat Hudson 7-0, Gymnastics beat Westborough W, 136.9-129.1, and Girls Indoor Track also beat Westborough 50-41. Westborough beat Boys Indoor Track  36-55.

On Friday, Boys Swimming/Diving continued its winning streak with a 93-51 win over Worcester. ARHS Athletics tweeted an identical score for the Girls team, which would be their first win of the season. (I suspect it may have been scored as a co-ed competition.) Both teams will compete in regional championships this week.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for the week.
