The week in sports: Celebrating Title IX’s 50th anniversary and the start of spring

Over the weekend, Principal Sean Bevan emailed the Algonquin community about last week’s big Hockey win that coincided with an important anniversary:

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX being passed into law. The groundbreaking change, which prohibits sex-based discrimination, impacted all aspects of our lives, including for our female athletes, who were finally provided equal access to the same resources of coaching, equipment, gym time, etc. as their male peers.

Last weekend, our tenth-seeded women’s ice hockey team (which includes athletes from several other towns) defeated Canton HS, winning the program’s first-ever state title, 2-1. They won their previous two win-or-go-home games in overtime as well.

In 1972, ARHS didn’t have a women’s ice hockey team. The only sports available to our young women at the time – it appears from the yearbook – were basketball, field hockey, tennis, track, and cheerleading. Today, we offer 16 different sports for our girls and 16 for our boys. And the impacts are considerable: girls that play sports report higher levels of confidence at all levels of adolescence and have higher GPA’s than peers that do not play sports.

More than just thrilling, the ice hockey team’s gritty, gutsy, joyful win last weekend was the culmination of a magical tournament run and of 50 years of progress for ARHS. Congrats to these young women for bringing home the first championship in the Titans era!

Last Monday was the opening day for the school’s Spring Sports. (Below are pics tweeted by @ARHS Athletics of Spring Opening Day.)
