New “Adaptive/Inclusive” recreational programs through “Rec Connect”

Southborough has teamed up with Shrewsbury and Northborough to offer joint "inclusive" programs, starting with a teen Holiday Gift Crafternoon and Gym Games for kids and teens

The Recreation departments of Southborough, Northborough, and Shrewsbury announced a partnership to offer adaptive programs that include support for residents with disabilities and some social opportunities with residents without disabilities.

Registration is already open for a teen craft program on December 10th and a gym games series starting on January 3rd. Both of these “Adaptive” programs are specifically geared for residents with disabilities. They take place in Shrewsbury. (Scroll down for more details.)

Registration for all of the “Rec Connect” programs will be conducted through Shrewsbury’s website. (That means you’ll need to create a profile on their system.) But all of the programs will be listed on Southborough Rec’s website with links to sign up.

Southborough Rec’s explanation includes:

Rec Connect is an adaptive/inclusive social program designed for those with and without disabilities to come together and build friendships while enjoying recreational activities and community outings. These programs are staff-supported to ensure a structured and welcoming environment. Community outings will be held in small groups on various days of the week and at varying times. Participants will register for individual events based on their interests and schedule.

I spoke with Rec Director Tim Davis about how the registration balance for each program will be handled. He clarified that the programs aren’t all both adaptive and inclusive. Instead description will specify the intended audience. Registration also includes questionnaires to be completed that will help parents understand the program intent.

It looks like the titles may clarify as well. The first two programs, titled as Adaptive, are described as “designed for people with diverse abilities who may need additional support”.
