Southborough will need to recruit a new Building Commissioner (Updated)

Southborough’s Building Commissioner, Casey Burlingame, has resigned.

Southborough’s position is in charge of both building inspections and zoning enforcement. And filling the vacancy might not be as swift as the last time.

Last February, the former Commissioner Laurie Lavoli announced that she would be retiring on March 3rd. The Town was able to post the job in February, prior to her departure.

The Select Board was able to interview and approve hiring Burlingame on March 31st, with April 24th as his start date.

This time, the resignation was apparently without notice beyond accrued vacation time. The resignation was submitted on Friday and the Town’s website already lists the position as vacant on the Town website.

A position isn’t yet posted on the Town website, or on the Mass Municipal Association website (where other Towns are currently hiring for similar positions).

No agenda was posted for the next Select Board to convene on the issue this week. Their next regularly scheduled meeting is this Tuesday, April 1st. I presume that will include discussing plans to recruit a new commissioner.

Updated (3/29/24 9:42 am): I heard back from Town Administrator Mark Purple (who was out yesterday). He explained the plan to avoid a gap:

The Select Board will be appointing Gene Novak as Acting/Interim Building Commissioner at their 4/2 meeting.  Mr. Novak currently works for us as the part-time Building Inspector, and is a fully-credentialed inspector, recently retired from the State.  We do not anticipate any gaps in the services provided by the Building Department as we recruit a new Commissioner.
