MWDN: SPD Chief voices safety concern over teens on e-bikes and scooters

Southborough's Police Chief told Metrowest Daily News that he hopes parents will talk to their teens about safe riding habits.

Last week, the Metrowest Daily News ran a story about the rise of electronic bike popularity in MetroWest resulting in growing “Reports of unsafe riding”. It included a quote from Southborough’s Police Chief.

The MWDN story article states:

Southborough Police Chief Ryan Newell said most of the complaints his department has received are due to teens riding recklessly.

“Almost all complaints in Southborough regarding e-bikes and scooters have been teenager-related and are taking place on some of our side streets or in school parking lots,” Newell wrote in an email. “Most complaints stem from teens not operating these e-bikes or scooters safely, by not wearing helmets, speeding, and/or when teenagers are riding while turned around (not looking in front of them) and videoing their friends riding behind them. We hope that parents will recognize this as a real safety issue and speak to their teens on how and where to safely operate these e-bikes and scooters.”
