Upcoming after school programs

Now is the time of year where parents who haven’t already signed their kids up for sports and after school classes start looking around to see what’s available.

Good news, the new RAP offerings are out. (And on a sparkling new Southborough Recreation Department website. Check it out!)

The Rec Dept is also offering a 7 week Cross Country program at Trottier. It takes place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Meets are held on Wednesdays, and include 2 away events. That registration deadline is this Friday, September 6, with a program start date of Monday, September 9.

Cross Country is a running sport for children of all abilities. The goal of the program is the development of children in the following areas: social, athletic, physical fitness, positive attitude, goal setting, teamwork, leg strength, speed and also pace awareness. Program dates: September 9 to October 25

RAP registration begins Monday, September 9, for the session beginning the week of September 23rd.

For those of you with students new to the system RAP is the town’s Recreation After-school Programs. They are run by Southborough Recreation (not the schools.)

Most are held at the schools, so kids can go directly to activities. (Note: Students need to be picked up when the activity ends. Exceptions are Trottier students who can take the Late Bus home Tues-Fri, and Extended Day participants.)

The fact that the sessions last only 5 weeks allows kids to explore new interests without long-term commitments. The first fall session offers the following choices:

  • Finn: Acting/Musical Theatre, Art with Southboro Belties, Basketball, Chess, Fashion Beads, Gardening Club, Lego Fun, Outdoor Games, Soccer, Tennis, Zumbatonic
  • Woodward: Art w/Sboro Belties, Basketball, Beasties, Chess, Dodgeball, Gadgets and Gizmos, Gym Games, Pillo Polo, Science Around Us, Tennis
  • Neary: Flag Football, Beasties, Archery, Basketball, Tennis, Intro to Stop Motion Animation Movie Making, Tennis, Pottery*, Kitchen Chemistry
  • Trottier: Speed & Agility, Pottery*, Digital Movie Making, and Fishing

*Neary and Trottier Pottery classes will take place at the Arts Center. Transportation there will be provided. Students will need to be picked up from the Arts Center at the end of class.

For more information on these programs, or to register, go to the new Southborough Rec Dept website.

As a parent of of two Algonquin students, I miss the opportunities for them to sign up for the after school programs that RAP has to offer. They always wanted to sign up for a RAP class and hang out after school and looked forward to the next brochure that came out. Now, at the high school level, they enjoy the clubs and sports offered after school. Great job to the Southboro Recreation Department staff for continuing to offer such great programs for our kids!
