This week in sports: Hockey cup win; Gymnastics starting on a roll

Algonquin athletics should be starting the year in good spirits. The holidays were good to many of the varsity athletes.

On Saturday, T-Hawks Hockey won the Metrowest Daily News Cup from Hopkinton – the team it lost to last year. Wicked Local reports:

Henry Antino didn’t play in the Daily News Cup last year as a freshman.

This season, the sophomore didn’t shy from the limelight in his initiation into the 19th annual Daily News Cup clash.

The Tomahawks fell to Hopkinton in last year’s final, but with the help of Antino’s poise and production, Algonquin – widely considered one of the state’s best – captured its second tournament title of the young season. (Click here for story and pics.)

They weren’t the only team to get press over the weekend.

The Gonk Gymnastics team has just competed in two meets to date and won both. (143.1 to 126.85 vs Westborough and 140.2 – 126.9 vs Groton-Dunstable.) The Telegram covered the new head coach leading the team to its strong start. Jordan McStay is a former team member who won a state championship and trip to Nationals in 2014. She told the paper:

When we won those state championships when I was here, everyone supported everyone else. We were solid whether competing or just watching. No drama, just best friends. I kind of feel that we have that type of energy with this team.

She is assisted by the former head coach who led her team of state champs in 2011 and 2012.  You can read about the team and some of this year’s outstanding gymnasts here.

Some teams generate their own PR through tweets.

Wrestling congratulated Captain Andrew Goddard for coming in 3rd place out of 55 wrestlers in his bracket at the Holiday Tournament.

Coach Ken Morin tweeted the following updates on Indoor Track from big competitions on Friday and Saturday*:

  • Tess Reyes finished third in the 2 Mile Boston Holiday Challenge (11:10.83), breaking the school record by 39 seconds.
  • In the Mass State Track Coaches Association Distance Classic:
    • Jon Symons finished 7th place in the 1 mile
    • In the 2 mile, Nick West came in 6th for Boys and Gabby Cline 10th for Girls (beating her personal record by 58 seconds)
    • The 4 x 800m relay team of Connor Lawless, Jon Symons, Will Lamburn, Nick West finished 5th
