Clarification on school budgets

Last week I posted a story about school budgets for FY2010. Superintendent Charles Gobron presented budget numbers at the Northborough School Committee meeting. I indicated in my post that the budget was for the entire school district, but I’ve since learned (thanks, Mom!) that’s not the case.

Here’s how the budget process works. There are actually three school budgets: one for Northborough, one for Southborough, and a regional one. Each town votes on their respective budgets at Town Meeting. The towns also both vote on the regional budget.

The budget Superintendent Gobron presented last week was for Northborough only. If you’d like to read more about it, check out this article in the Metrowest Daily News. I’ll post more about the Southborough and regional school budgets as the information becomes available.

Thanks for the clarification.

I will be presenting the superintendent’s preliminary FY’10 budget for Southborough tomorrow night at Trottier Middle School.

Next Wednesday, December 17, 2008, I’ll be presenting the superintendent’s preliminary FY’10 budget for the regional high school at Algonquin.

I’ll be very happy to answer any questions about these budgets that you or your readers may have.

It’s important for all of us to work together to meet the needs of our students as we try to craft budgets that also consider the fiscal constraints of the towns.

Charles E. Gobron, Ed.D.
