The Algonquin girls basketball team captured their first ever Division 1 Central championship title at Fitchburg State on Saturday night. Third-seed Algonquin beat out top-seed Shrewsbury by a score of 46-36. The last time the Algonquin girls won a district championship was back in 1979 when the school was part of District 2.

The girls now head to the state championship tournament. On Tuesday they’ll face off against West champions Amherst in the semi-finals at the DCU Center in Worcester. The game starts at 7:45 pm. Go Algonquin!
