Will Hurricane Irene put a damper on Summer Nights?

Yesterday’s earthquake didn’t have much of an impact on Southborough, but a hurricane barreling up the East Coast this weekend just might.

The annual Southborough Summer Nights celebration is scheduled for Sunday evening starting at 5:00 pm at Neary School. That’s right around the time some forecasters have Hurricane Irene reaching New England with potentially damaging winds and heavy rain.

Of course, those of us who have lived in New England for any length of time know that dire predictions about the weather – be it hurricane, snow storm, or otherwise – don’t always pan out. Recreation Director Doreen Ferguson, who will make the call on whether to hold Summer Nights on Sunday as planned, said she isn’t putting much stock in early predictions about the storm’s path.

“I plan to look at the forecast on Thursday and make the call shortly after,” she said.

The rain date for Summer Nights is Monday, August 29.

Hurricane Irene is the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2011 season. Current projections show Irene making landfall in the Carolinas and then moving up the East Coast, threatening New England with damaging winds and heavy rain Saturday night through Monday.

Stay tuned as the storm progresses. I’ll share the decision on Summer Nights as soon as I have it.
