Obituary: Jean Hartford, 80

HUDSON – Jean Louise (Cummings) Hartford, 80 died on March 17th at Marlborough Hills following a brief period of declining health.

Jean was a lifelong Hudson resident and homemaker, and the wife of John A. Hartford, who passed away in 1976. She was the daughter of Florence Nightingale and Edgar Cummings. She leaves two daughters, Debra Hartford of Hudson, with whom she lived, and Darlene Scorzelli and her husband Paul of Southborough. She also leaves her cherished grandchildren John, Peter, and Michael Scorzelli, all of Southborough, and her beloved sister, Ruth Ryan, of Hudson and many nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by siblings, Florence Gay, Edgar Cummings, Edith Coulter, Albert Cummings, Dorothy Mulhern, Hazel Mauro and Charles Cummings.

Jean often spoke fondly of her memories growing up on River Street and later, on Stowe Court. Having been stricken with a life altering stroke in 1965 and then losing her husband to cancer a decade later, she was a private and cautious woman who lived life simply and without frivolity. She enjoyed knitting, listening to country music, and gardening. Her grandchildren brought her tremendous joy in her later years and they in turn have learned so much about life, love, and compassion from their dear Garba. She lovingly shared her home with numerous pets and is deeply missed by her pug, Hugo.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the First Federated Church of Hudson, 200 Central St. Hudson. Burial will follow in Forestvale Cemetery in Hudson. At the request of the family there will be no visiting hours. Funeral arrangements under the direction of the William R. Short and Son Funeral Home of Marlborough (www.shortfuneral.com)
