Obituary: Edward F. Hanlon, 94

YARMOUTH – Hanlon, Edward F., 94 of S. Yarmouth, formerly of Melrose, died Sunday April 15, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of the late Mildred E. (Hardy) Hanlon, who died in 1991. Born and raised in Dorchester and a member of St. Matthew’s parish, Mr. Hanlon was the son of the late James E. and Margaret M. (McHugh).

Mr. Hanlon was a professional engineer and spent his career working for General Electric in West Lynn. After 40 years of service, he and his “First Mate” Millie, moved to S. Yarmouth in 1980. Ed enjoyed sailing and handcrafted the 26 foot sloop “Indian Summer” that he sailed from Marblehead to Bass River.

Mr. Hanlon is survived by six children to cherish his memory, Ann Marie Hanlon of Indiana, John E. and his wife, Elizabeth Iampieri of West Yarmouth, Margaret M. Jurgens and husband, Holger of California, Julia F. Hanlon of New York, Edward J. and wife, Maureen (O’Toole) of Minnesota, and James E. of Southborough; siblings, Margaret Kelley and late husband, Frank of Foxboro, James and late wife, Fran (Fresia) of Peabody, Helen Norton and late husband, Albert of Sandwich, the late George and widow, Constance (Maxwell) of Worcester, and the late John and Lillian (Kinney); five beloved grandchildren, Joyce Thomas and husband, Ward of Minnesota, Michelle Borland and husband, Patrick of Florida, Yvonne Jurgens of California, Sean Hanlon of Lynn, and Patrick Hanlon and wife, Molly (McManus) of Minnesota; five great grandchildren, Rebecca, Bryce, Owen, Kendra, and Lilly; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Vi O’Brien of South Yarmouth.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday April 21 in Saint Francis Xavier Church, 347 South St., Hyannis, MA 02601. Interment will follow in Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery, Pine St., Centerville, MA 02601. Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday April 20 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., S. Yarmouth, MA 02664.
