Runners who like to dress up to get dirty: Wicked Mud Run, October 12

I’m having visions of monsters and zombies rising triumphantly from the mud.

No, I haven’t been watching scary movies. I’ve just been learning about “Wicked Mud Run II”.

This hardcore workout/fundraiser will take place at Ski Ward in Shrewsbury, Saturday, October 12, 2013.

The Wicked Mud Run series is founded and run by Southborough residents, Ray Thompson and Dan O’Rourke.

They launched the first run this June in Bolton and raised over $2,000 for charity.

They hope to top that this month. To help, they added a fun twist.  They are encouraging runners to come in costume.

Best costume prizes will be awarded alongside prizes for finish times.

Wondering what a Wicked Mud Run is (and if you are up for it?).

O’Rourke and Thompson describe it as a:

timed 5k OBSTACLE COURSE through SLOPPY MUD, over WALLS and BEAMS, through TREES and TRAILS and TRENCHES full of WATER and MORE MUD and a SANDBAG GAUNTLET and more UNDISCLOSED HARDCORE BARRIERS.

After the run, participants will celebrate by hosing down and drinking beer “while listening to live music and eating some BBQ and clam chowdah with all of our new MUDDY FRIENDS!”

A portion of the event’s proceeds will go to 3 charities: Autism Speaks, Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance and Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen. Funds are raised through 10% of runner fees, sponsored matching contributions, and 100% of raffle sales.

Thompson and O’Rourke plan to extend the series with a straight out 5K this March in Worcester.
