Moderator seeking Advisory Committee applications by Sunday

As I reported earlier this week, John Butler has resigned from the Advisory Committee. That leaves the committee with a vacancy as they head into their busiest and generally most critical period.

Moderator David Coombs addressed the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night about his need to fill the spot quickly. He plans to make a decision by the end of next week. To do that, he wants applications in “by the end of this weekend.”

Seeking to recruit applicants, Coombs reminded the public that the Advisory Committee is essentially a finance committee and integral to our Town Government.

The moderator also addressed dearth of specific demographics on Town Committees. He believes the point of view of new residents, families of young children, and residents just starting their carees is lacking. So he is encouraging them to consider coming forward – even if they have never served on a committee before.

If you’d like to toss your hat in the ring, click here for the volunteer application form.

Note: The form is now set up for online submission with no obvious way to attach documents. It is possible that options pops up after you click submit. If it doesn’t, I suggest emailing one with a letter to selectmensoffice@southboroughma.com in addition to submitting the form. (The Town Website’s FAQ answer confirms that including a resume with your application is expected. And Town Administrator Mark Purple confirmed that applications for the post sent to that email wil be forwarded to Coombs.)

Both Coombs and Chair John Rooney thanked John Butler for his invaluable service to the Town over the year. Rooney called his intellect unparalleled, and “his ability to analyze issues is both surgical and precise. He went on to say that given his wealth of experience, his shoes can’t be filled, at least not immediately.

The entire Town owes Mr. Butler a hearty thanks for the time and wisdom he has contributed over more than thirty years. He will be sorely missed on the Advisory Committee and as Mr. Rooney stated is irreplaceable.
