Student Arts: Musical performances, art displays and more (Updated)

Above: Southborough and Algonquin students have been exhibiting their artistical and musical talents.

I came across a couple of newsworthy items on student arts and academics. So, I started looking for others and discovered an embarrassment of riches. In fact, there are so many that I’m going to have to split them into two different roundups.

Since March is a month the state celebrates student arts, that’s where I’ll start.

Algonquin students performed at Mechanics Hall – GONK.ARTS:

Algonquin at Mechanics Hall (image from Gonk.Arts website)[In January,] 23 Algonquin students performed in the Massachusetts Central District Music Festival Concert. Algonquin was well represented in each of the four performing groups: chorus, jazz band, orchestra and concert band. The students rehearsed throughout the school week with other talented musicians from Central Mass and worked with exceptional music educators and conductors on high level repertoire. (read more)

Middle & High School Jazz night – Northboro Southboro Music Association:

This year’s guest star artist was trumpeter Christine Fawson (see more pics, view video)

Neary students shine at state’s Youth Art Month events:

(image tweeted by Neary Art Teacher Denise Johnson)This month, the state is celebrating student art and music. Southborough and Northborough schools selected and contributed artwork to an exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum, running until April.

Two of Neary’s students received the Director’s award from WAM.

Libraries display student artwork:

The Southborough Library has a standing, rotating exhibit of Southborough student artwork. (This month, it features hopi seed pots by Neary students.)

According to Southborough Wicked Local, the Northborough Library is featuring a special exhibit of Algonquin student art now through April 1:

The exhibit features a variety of work on a number of media including collages, pencil drawings, acrylics, and digital artwork. The works represent a diverse skill level; students in Art 1 and 2, Advanced Art 1 and 2, Digital Art, and AP Art all participated in the exhibit. (read more)

Another great year at MAJEARHS Principal’s Report:

At the recent, and hosted MAJE Festival, both of our Jazz Ensembles (Jazz I & II) were awarded Silver Medals. At the Jazz Choir competition at UNH, our Algonquin Jazz Choir brought home the Gold Medal.

Boston Globe Scholastic Art AwardsARHS Principal’s Report:

The Boston Globe gave out honors to the following Algonquin artists for their works: Max Donahue won 2 Silver Keys for Fashion, Nadine El Nesr won a Gold Key for painting, a Silver Key drawing, and 2 Honorable Mentions for drawing, Bridey McGlynn won 2 Honorable Mentions for painting, and 1 for Mixed Media, Nicole Santamaria won 2 Honorable Mentions for painting, William Koziel won a Silver Key and a Honorable Mention for photography, and Joyce Fang won a Honorable Mention for Painting.
