Overnight fire at duplex on Blueberry Lane: No injuries, home uninhabitable (Updated)

Above: WBZ reported on a fire in Southborough early this morning (image cropped from video here)

This morning, Southborough Firefighters put out a fire in a duplex on Blueberry Lane. I don’t have many details yet, but I can share that there were no injuries. That detail and others that follow are from a WBZ News update. You can watch that here.* [Editor’s Note: Scroll down for updated details from an SFD press release.]

According to WBZ’s reporting, the fire in the living room occurred before 3:30 am. The house is uninhabitable, displacing at least 2 residents. (If I learn any details on how the community can support the residents, I promise to share.)

Blueberry Lane is part of the Southborough Meadows senior/55+ housing development in the William Onthank Lane neighborhood off of Boston Road.

*Sorry – The WBZ video wasn’t embeddable.

Updated (10/23/19 9:59 am): Almost as soon as I posted the news, Chief Steven Achilles issued a press release with more details. The following release reinforces the importance of working smoke detectors that allowed residents to safely evacuate:

On Wednesday October 23, 2019 at 3:23 a.m. the Southborough Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building at 7 Blueberry Lane, Southborough. Engine 23 and Ambulance 28 responded and while en route the duty captain transmitted a first alarm. Upon arrival crews found a 1 ½ story, wood frame duplex with heavy black smoke coming from the front door of the left side unit. All residents had evacuated and were accounted for. A 1 ¾” attack line was stretched to the interior where the living room was ablaze. The fire was quickly knocked down through the aggressive efforts of the initial responding units. There were no injuries to the residents of either unit or firefighting personnel. The unit sustained heavy fire and smoke damage, and the right side unit (#5) had minor smoke damage. The fire was brought under control at 3:52 a.m.

In addition to the initial units, Southborough Tower 21, Engine 22, and Car 30 responded, along with a Hopkinton Ladder and Westborough Engine. Marlborough Fire and off-duty Southborough personnel covered the station.

The residents of 7 Blueberry Lane were alerted by smoke detectors in the home. This early detection was essential in them safely evacuating the home before the conditions inside rapidly deteriorated.

The fire is under investigation by the Southborough Fire Department.

The SFD is likely to post images to Facebook later today. You can check for those here.
