Algonquin Gymnastics hosted the state championship on Saturday. The team placed 2nd in the tourney. That sets them up to compete in the New England Championships in two weeks. Plus, Sophomore Lizzy Debroczy won her second straight All Around state title.

The team will head to Connecticut on March 14th for the New England competition. According to Wicked Local, it’s the first time in 8 years.

Wicked Local writes:

Debroczy won the All-Around with a score of 38.550. She also won the outright title in the bars (9.700) and the beam (9.775). Teammate Mia Gorman took sixth in the All-Around with a total of 36.450.

The story includes interviews with Debroczy and coach Jordan McStay. You can read that and see photo highlights here.

The writer, Kevin J. Stone, also captured many of the Gonk Gymnasts’ performances on video. You can find those via his tweets like the one below here.

Earlier on Saturday, THawks Girls Hockey played in its state tourney. The 8th seed Algonquin & Hudson team fell 3-2 to lower seed Westwood. The Telegram recapped:

Melissa Perry and Ella Kea each scored on assists from Kerryn O’Connell, while Kaitlin Mathews made 28 saves as the No. 8 Tomahawks (13-5-3) fell in a Division 2 state first round game.

As I noted on Friday, 6 skiers are competing at the MIAA Alpine Ski Tournament on Wednesday. The races begin at 9:30 am at Berkshire East Mountain Resort in Charlemont.
