Winter Storm Warning: No School on Friday; 4-8″ projected with messy morning commute (Updated)

The Superintendent of Northborough and Southborough Schools has announced that tomorrow, Friday, January 7th, will be a snow day. He referenced the forecast as the reason for the decision.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for our area overnight into late. The National Weather Service is predicting Southborough to get around 6-8″ of heavy snow.

NWS warning

NWS’ model showed* snow as likely starting before 6:00 am. By 7:00 am it’s projected to be falling at a clip of over an inch per hour, not beginning to dwindle until after 10:00 am.

I’m not sure what pushed the district to make the decision this far in advance rather than continuing to monitor the forecast. But the situation with staffing shortages due to high covid numbers may have helped push the level of certainty that school wasn’t viable tomorrow.

On January 4th, the administration notified parents to be prepared for inconsistencies in travel times as they adjust for driver shortages. I’ve also heard there is a high number of substitutes. So even if weather proves to be tamer in our area than currently forecast, the administration would still have to worry about the larger area impact on bus drivers, teachers and subs in the morning.

The cancellation moves the last day of NSBORO school to Tuesday, June 21st. (That Monday, June 20th there will be no school in observance of Juneteenth.)

Updated (1/7/22 9:22 am): The Southborough Library will be closed today.

*Also, I removed a Facebook video of NWS weather model that was no longer working. It appears that the agency deleted the post.
