There were some big competitions for ARHS athletes this past weekend, and more important ones still coming up.

On Saturday, Algonquin Boys Ice Hockey won the Quarter Finals of the Central Mass. Athletic Directors Association’s tournament. The 4th seed team beat 5th seed North Middlesex 2-0. You can check out the Telegram’s coverage of the action here and their pics here.

The Community Advocate covered the Boys’ choice to wear their camoflauge jerseys in memory of Brian Arsenault, an alum and former player who was killed in action in 2014.

Gonk’s win sets them up to face top seed Marlborough in the semi-finals. (That schedule is still TBA.) Marlborough is top ranked in MIAA Division 3 Power Rankings, while Algonquin is ranked 18 out of 41 D2 schools.

Mia Gorman Feb 9 meet by Owen JonesEarlier on Saturday, Algonquin Gymnasts came in a close 2nd place to Groton-Dunstable at the Mid-Wach League Championships. Southborough’s Mia Gorman won the all-around gold medal and was named Senior of the Year. You can read more of the results in the Telegram. According to the paper, Saturday was also a good day for Algonquin Wrestlers:

Junior captain Rafael Knapp, in the 160-pound division placed first in the Division 1 West/Central Sectional wrestling tournament on Saturday. Senior Tim Goddard was second at the 182-pound weight class, as was junior Colby Morgan also a runner-up in the 113 weight class. Adam Ayzenshtat was fourth in the 195-pound division.

They’ll compete in the State tournament starting on Friday.

On Sunday, ARHS competed in the Central/West Sectional Championship Swim & Dive Meet. The school tweeted that the Boys placed 9th out 25 teams and the Girls 17th out of 28. Here are some of their highlights:

In the 200 Freestyle Relay (Greg Roumiantsev, Robert Hurley, Axel Soderquist, Coleman Hostage) placed 4th. In the 400 Free Relay (Jason Wong, Soderquist, Branden Yan, Hostage) placed 4th

and

Monica Doherty placed 6th in the 200 Free and 12th in the 100 Backstroke. Leona Sungkharom placed 5th in 50 Free and 5th in 100 Free.

Tonight, Algonquin Boys and Girls Basketball will enter the Mid-Wach League’s Central Mass tournament.

Shephard Hill Girls will come to Algonquin to play in the Quarter Finals at 6:30 pm.  In the Mid-Wach brackets, ARHS was seeded 3rd and Shepherd Hill 6th. Seedings were based off the updated power rankings. In the three weeks since first posted, the Gonk Girls moved up 3 notches to 26 out of 64 Division 1 teams. Shepherd Hill is also ranked at 26, but out of Division 2’s 66 teams.

The winner will play in semi-finals on Wednesday (I presume against either 2nd seed Westborough or 7th seed Leominster).

The 7th seed ARHS Boys will travel to Wachusetts to face their 2nd seed team. In the D1 rankings, Wachusetts is ranked 19, while the Gonk Boys have slipped from 56 to 60 (out of 65).

No regional tourneys are posted for ARHS Girls Hockey. But they have moved up 4 places to #5 out of 54 in Power Rankings for eventual state tournaments.

Last week, ARHS Skiers performed well again on Ski Ward’s slopes. The Girls came in 2nd with three skiers finishing in the top 10. The Boys came in 4th as a team. You can view the full results here, and photo highlights (courtesy of Owen Jones Photography) below:
