Events this week: Mental Health, Town Meeting, NECC Art Show, Free Comics, Plant UnSale, Shop with a Purpose, and Backyard Orchard (Updated)

Here are highlights of what’s happening around town this week. [Note: To help special programs stand out, I’m using gray event titles for the programs that occur weekly.]

Monday, May 2, 2022

  • Walking Group for Seniors (8:30 am) @ Trottier Middle School’s outdoor track: Free walking group organized by the Southborough Senior Center, see newsletter. Walkers generally go for an hour, but continue for as long as you wish. The location is a loop, so feel free to join late.
  • Senior Center registration opens (10:00 am) @ 508-229-4453: This is the morning the public can begin signing up for May and June events and classes organized by the Southborough Senior Center. (That includes upcoming bus trips and special in-person programs sure to fill up quickly.) The newsletter stresses, “Do not leave any Program Registrations on Voicemail, please connect with a staff member to register for all programs at all times.” For details, see dedicated post.
  • Stretch Break Class for seniors (10:15 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: For details on weekly class, see newsletter.
  • Preschool Story Time (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and craft based on a weekly theme. No registration required.
  • Youth Writing Club (3:30 -4:30 pm) @ zoom: The Southborough Library is hosting this virtual creative writing club for ages 10-18. The zoom sessions are a fun and supportive space to get creative and build skills with peers. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Wellness Series: Mental Fitness (7:00 – 8:00 pm) @ zoom: The free Wellness Series for ages 12+ is offered by the Southborough Library and Jill Vroman Fitness & Wellness. This session: Learn how you sabotage yourself daily and how it is possible to correct it in order to take care of your emotional health and brain to reach your full potential. Registration required.   • Senior Songsters (11:00 am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Weekly rehearsal for the singing group open to all area seniors regardless of singing ability. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Bridge (12:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: A weekly card group, welcoming new participants. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Parent Support Group (12:30 -1:30 pm) @ South Union Building, 21 Highland St: Join Southborough Youth & Family Services for a space to vent, get good ideas, and decompress before going back to the very important job of parenting. For details, see related post.
  • Knitting Club (1:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Knitters, welcoming new members. For details, contact the Senior Center at 508-229-4453.
  • Tuesday Tech Time (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Need help with technology? Library staff and teen volunteers will make every effort to assist you. Bring questions about ebooks and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. Sessions are limited to no more than 1 hour.

  • Southborough Goes Green: In support of Mental Health Awareness Month, Southborough Youth & Family Services is encouraging our entire community to wear green on this day.

  • Dull Men’s Club (10:00 am) @ zoom: Casual social club for senior men. New members are always welcome to drop in. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Outdoor Pre-K Yoga (10:30 – 11:15 am) @ Southborough Library Lawn: Yoga program for 3-6 year olds (and siblings and caregivers). Registration is required. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Whoo(pie) Wagon (1:30 – 3:00 pm) @ Neary School parking lot, 53 Parkerville Road: Pick up your orders of whoopie pies and other treats for this Neary SOS Fundraiser. (The orders are due in advance, by 2:00 pm on May 5th.) For details, see dedicated post.
  • Annie Jr. (7:00 – 8:15 pm) @ Trottier Middle School: Trottier Drama production starring Southborough middle schoolers. (The first live one since January 2020!) Tickets will be available for $5 at the door.

  • Free Comic Book Day (10:30 am – 4:30 pm) @ Southborough Library: The library will be celebrating Free Comic Book Day with comic books for patrons provided free-of-charge by Diamond Comic Distributors. Come to the library dressed as your favorite comic book character. Library staff will pick their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.   • Plant Unsale (8:30 am – 1:00 pm) @ Transfer Station lower area, 147 Cordaville Road: Volunteers will be collecting donations to support the St. Mark’s Summer Youth Mission Trip in exchange for potted plants “and more”.   • Shop with a Purpose (11:00 am – 4:00 pm) @ Community House, 28 Main street: Friends of Southborough Youth Commission (FSYC) is hosting a shopping fundraiser for the Southborough Summer Camp Scholarship program. The event is a craft & vendor fair with mini photo shoots and a raffle of vendors’ goods. For details, see dedicated post.
  • Backyard Orchard (1:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Library lawn: Free presentation by Blackstone Valley Veggie Gardens. “Growing tree fruit can be challenging, but with a few hints and the right techniques, you’ll have enough apples, pears, and everything else for the entire neighborhood!” ​The event is open to all, no registration required thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of the Southborough Library.
  • Annie Jr. (3:00 – 4:15 pm) @ Trottier Middle School: Trottier Drama production starring Southborough middle schoolers. (The first live one since January 2020!) Tickets will be available for $5 at the door.

Updated (5/2/22 9:27 am): I just learned that Trottier students are performing Annie Jr this Friday and Saturday.
