The week in sports

With the opening of Algonquin’s Multipurpose turf field last week, many of the ARHS teams are now able to hold true home games.

On Wednesday, Titans Field Hockey beat Shrewsbury 4-1. That improved their record to 10-2-1, and raised their Power Ranking from #10 to #5 for Division 1.

The Community Advocate covered Field Hockey’s home field win, the school’s first win on the new field. The story highlighted that it is the first time the girls were able to compete at Algonquin in eight years. Due to the school’s field conditions and capacity, they had been forced to play offsite since 2016.

The article also features the coach and players’ thoughts on the team’s improved play over the past few weeks. Click here for the story. (You can also see Owen Jones Photo’s highlights of the Wednesday game, which was Senior Night, here.)

Girls Volleyball remained in 4th place in the D2 rankings. Last week, the team suffered one loss (0-3 to Westborough), and notched two more wins (3-0 over Wachusett and Groton-Dunstable), improving its record to 13-2.

This week’s updated rankings for soccer don’t include ARHS’ most recent wins on Saturday.

Girls Soccer stayed at #14 for D1. The team is currently at 6-3-4 following last week’s tie (1-1 against Shrewsbury) and two wins (4-0 over Wachusett and 1-0 over Acton Boxborough). Both Owen Jones Photo and the Telegram published photo highlights from the Wachusett win, the Girls’ first game on the new field.

Boys Soccer lost to Shrewsbury (5-2) but scored two more wins (2-1 over Wachusett and 2-0 over Bromfield). Their D1 rankings fell from #29 to #35. They’ll need to improve in order to make this year’s playoffs.

Boys Football lost again, 33-28 to Marlborough, officially disqualifying them from the playoffs. (They are ranked #19 in D2 with 0 wins and only 2 more regular season games. Only the top 16 teams with at least 3 wins can compete in the playoffs.)

As usual, Cross Country and Boys Golf are the first teams heading into post-season tourneys. Most of the other varsity teams will wrap up their regular seasons next week.

Last week, ARHS Golf lost to Westborough, then beat Acton-Boxborough, updating their record to 9-5. Today and tomorrow are their final regular meets. The Golf League Championship meet is this Wednesday and the Central District Championship is next Monday.

Cross Country is also done with their regular season varsity meets. They will compete in the Central Mass Championships this weekend.
