The week in ARHS sports

[Results from last week’s competitions, media highlights, and what’s on tap this week in Algonquin Regional High School varsity sports.]

For most MIAA fall sports, the regular season is scheduled to end late this week or early next week. For a few of the Algonquin varsity teams the remaining games have very high stakes.

The ARHS Girls Volleyball team enjoyed a 3-1 win over Leominster last Tuesday, making it a good night to celebrate Senior Night. Sports Photographer Jeff Slovin posted highlights from the event:

Titans Volleyball followed with another win, 3-2, over Medway on Thursday. But they lost Friday’s game against Hopkinton 1-3.

That updates their record to 7-9. The team is ranked #36 in D1. Th team’s final two games on the schedule are this Tuesday and Friday. To make the Division 1 playoffs, they’ll need to either win both, or somehow move up four ranks despite not achieving that.

The challenge is even bigger for Boys Soccer. The team is just barely within reach of the playoffs. They have some momentum from winning both of last week’s games 1-0 over Leominster and Natick. And they recently moved up 7 spots to #44 for Division 1.

But with a 4-7-3 record, the Boys can’t afford to lose any of the 4 remaining games. And they can only get away with one more tie. (That’s unless the team miraculously shoots up another 12 spots in the rankings.)

Girls Soccer‘s record is currently only 4-6-4. But with a ranking of #24, they have a pretty safe shot at playing in their D1 tourney. Last week, the Titans beat Nipmuc 2-1 at Monday’s Senior Night game. They followed up with a 0-0 tie with Nashoba on Thursday.

Here is Slovin’s post from their Senior Night:

Field Hockey scored two wins (1-0 over Shrewsbury and 4-1 over Auburn) last week, with a 0-5 loss to Nashoba in between. They now stand at 5-9-1 with just three games left. But, with a #21 ranking, they’re also likely to make their brackets.

Gonk Football lost its fourth straight game on Saturday, 18-27 against Shrewsbury. But, as I’ve previously posted, the team cinched their place in Division 2 playoffs early. After winning their first three games of the season, the only criteria left was playing in at least four more games. Saturday’s loss checked that box.

They have one more regular game this Friday night before the playoff series begins.

At the Cross Country Mid-Wach League Championships, ARHS’ Boys and Girls teams competed in the Division A 5K. For the Boys meet, Algonquin earned 2nd place as a team (behind Wachusett) and was able to boast three of four fastest runners:  Stephen Green in 1st place, Finn McManus in 2nd, and Clark Bezzant in 4th. The Girls team was last place in the 5-school meet. Abigail Clark was their fastest runner, finishing in 10th place.

Last Monday, I shared results for Boys Golf in the Central Sectionals that morning. That ended their season, but there is an earlier highlight that I missed. On the 14th, the team competed in the Mid-Wach League Championships. According to the Community Advocate, Algonquin came in 4th place out of six schools, led by Zach Dreyer in 8th place.
