To the Editor:
My name is Denise Eddy, and I am running for the K-8 Southborough School Committee, one-year term.
My family has lived in Southborough since 1979. As a stay-at-home mom I raised my son in Ashland, where I served on the Ashland School Committee for 15 years, and was Chair of the School Committee for 5 years.
I moved back to Southborough in 1998 and live on Deerfoot Road.
I have had extensive experience in education, both as a parent and administrator, and I understand the Massachusetts educational system both locally and state wide.
I have experience with budgeting, state and town regulations, and the philosophies that make for excellent education, such as we have in our outstanding schools in Southborough.
After I graduated from college I was an English teacher in the town of Milford, where I was Chair of the English Department, and I became the Director of the Gifted and Talented program for the district.
After my son was grown, I became Vice President of international and domestic sales for London Fog Industries, and traveled extensively throughout Asia, Europe and the US. When London Fog declared bankruptcy, I attended Law School and specialized in business and real estate law.
Currently I am also the CEO of a company that provides a platform for international students and universities, to assist undergraduate and graduate student placements in American colleges and universities.
I understand the demands on students, parents, teachers and administrators in the current educational climate, and I have experience with best practices to assure quality education for all our Southborough students, to prepare each child for a productive and fulfilling future.
I have extensive experience working with town government, including town meeting, as an effective supporter of schools.
I am currently raising my granddaughter, who is a junior at Algonquin. I have been actively involved with Southborough school district for years, and I currently serve as Treasurer on the Algonquin Regional High School APTO board.
I believe that the one-year position I am seeking will need a committee member who will work hard from day one to support our goals for all students. My extensive experience will enable me to work effectively for Southborough students and parents.
I also believe it’s important to keep communication open between parents, students, school staff, administration and teachers. We have an outstanding school community, with involved and dedicated families and educators. I will work hard to keep our schools exceptional, both challenging and nurturing to students. I am honored to run for this position, and I ask for your vote on May 13.
