[Spoiler Alert: If you want to watch the exciting Mixed Doubles Curling Olympic Finals tonight without knowing the outcome in advance, don’t read this post yet!]
As I posted yesterday, Southborough native Korey Dropkin helped make history at the Milano Cortina Olympics. The 2013 Algonquin graduate and his partner were the first US team to make the Olympics Mixed Doubles Curling playoffs.
Yesterday, they built on that success by securing their place as medalists. And today, they were officially awarded Silver Medals.
In Monday’s semi-finals, Team Cory and Korey (Dropkin and teammate Cory Thiesse) faced Italy โ the defending Gold Medalists and Olympic home team. It was the same team they had just lost their last preliminary match against (6-7) hours earlier.
C&K pulled off with a 9-8 win, guaranteeing them a Silver Medal or better. Obviously, they were dreaming of Gold. But Sweden had other plans. In a close game, the team lost the Finals 8-9.
Still, Silver Medals are more than a consolation prize. (And Thiesse has extra bragging rights as the first US female athlete to medal in Curling.)
There were smiles, not tears, on Cory’s and Korey’s faces in the photos posted from the podium. (Although, the joy was much greater in the pics posted after their Semi-Finals win.)
A quick internet search will pull up plenty of national news stories about the team and the games. For more of the local angle, you can read the Community Advocate’s coverage here. And below are social media highlights leading up to, and following, the Final game.
